Kauai 17 mile ocean kayak

On the Map

We love adventures and always challenge ourselves to try new activities. While planning for our Hawaii trip, Kauai island was a must visit on our list and we came across this 17 mile ocean kayak adventure. Little did we know this will be the most memorable part of the trip.

This 17-mile paddle traverses the spectacular northwest coast of Kauai. Fortunately due to weather conditions we could only do 12 mile :). The tour is worth every bit. Anne is an excellent guide and a gem of a person. We truly enjoyed the tour. Usually we are quick to suggest our adventures to fellow travelers but on this one I will be a little careful. It is strongly recommended to do this only if you are physically fit and active. Ocean kayaking is a completely different ball game and Kauai’s rough waters make it all the more difficult. So be sure you build some arm strength prior to the trip.

Originally this trip starts at Hā’ena beach park but due to flooding our trip was changed to round trip from Polihale beach. We got up at 5 am had a good breakfast and started the tour around 6 am. On our way to the coast we saw the beautiful sunrise. By now the tour organizers warned us a zillion times to an extent that we were irritated at some point, but when we entered the ocean (after a fall ofcourse) we quickly realised what we had signed up for. But giving up is never an option .. isn’t it? Though little nervous we decided to continue the trip.

Within 5 mins of kayaking we saw a pod of spinning dolphins, big sea turtles in that rough but crystal clear waters. It was truly a mesmerizing experience. We struggled to cut through the water and finally landed at Milolii for our lunch and rest break. Here you can explore this state park that is only accessible by water, enjoy a catered lunch, beach comb, use the restroom or take a nap. I remember I was so tired that I just wanted to crash :D. After a good rest break we started back for Polihale beach. We ended together with high-fives ,dip in the ocean, goodbyes to the wonderful team and some picrures.

It was indeed a scary but amazing experience! More details on –> https://www.napalikayak.com/
