Hostel stay in Switzerland ..

Looking for a budget stay for your next Swiss vacation? Consider youth hostels and you wouldn’t be disappointed.

For our Swiss trip we decided to stay in youth hostels mainly for two reasons – experience hostel fun and save some money 🙂 The hostels range from 35(shared) CHF to 75(private) CHF, whereas a decent hotel would cost around 100-150 CHF. The hostels provide a shared kitchen and laundry service which also help save money on money and washing. If you are travelling solo, with friends or even as a couple hostel stays could be fun as it gives an opportunity to meet new people and gather interesting stories.

Below are the hostels that we stayed in:

All three hostels provide a variety of shared and private rooms, kitchen and laundry services.

Balmers Hostel – Interlaken

The Balmers hostel is definitely our favourite and has so much character. It has a Balmers Club and thus there are events and parties happening. The Balmers hostel markets themselves as a party hostel and does not allow kids under 18 so please avoid booking in case travelling with minors.

Funny story, we stayed in a private room and one night when we were fast asleep, someone started banging on our door looking for their “lost” friend who was just drunk and dancing outside 🙂

Backpackers Lucerne & Zurich Youth hostels are definitely family friendly. You can book private rooms and the shared kitchen & Laundry will be definitely a plus with kids.

Our recommendations ? We enjoyed our stay at hostels because they were clean, had a kitchen which saves us some money and also gives an option to have home cooked meals. In our honest opinion they are just “sufficient” and more fun for solo travellers or someone who enjoys getting to meet new people. But if you are the kind who enjoy your privacy or upscale, comfortable hotel stays then this might not be for you. It is an interesting experience that everyone should try at least once.

Do we recommend this for parents travelling with kids ? It is a good option but now that we have so many airbnb’s available we would incline more towards booking those over hostels. That gives our toddler a lot of space to run around 🙂 Try a hostel with kids only if you yourself enjoy staying in one.

Again it really depends on one’s personal choice if you like staying in hostels, or if you are only looking for a place to crash at night, or if you are social and enjoy meeting new people then hostels are a great choice for you.
